Miss Davally and Wilby’s mother formed a friendship. Together, he and Anthony found a cave no one knew was there. Miss Davally thought the provincial wine-merchant’s child might be lonely. Wilby’s family came to the sea every July. On wet days they played marbles in the kitchen passages. Jericho, an old Labrador, followed them around. Assuming that Anthony is alive, why would he be employed as a kitchen worker in Paris?… Miss Davally, who had lived with Wilby’s family, had introduced them. The man turns away… It couldn’t have been Anthony. “Bonsoir.” Quite suddenly, the man is someone else. The man who came to look at him is on the street. Wilby eats and reads, indulging in the pleasure of being in Paris. He inherited then sold his family’s wine business in Ireland, just outside County Westmeath. Without communicating, the man who has come from the kitchen has gone… He visits Paris once in a while to make the rounds of salesrooms that sell rare postage stamps, spinning out his time, since he can afford to. Wilby assumes he is there to apologize for the lateness of his fish. Short story about a chance encounter a middle-aged man has in Paris with a childhood friend whom he thought was dead… Aware of a presence, Wilby glances up from his book.
